There are a number of vaccines required to provide protection against the different types of meningitis. There is no one vaccine that can protect against all of the types of meningitis.
Different vaccines are required to protect against pneumococcal disease and meningococcal disease.
In addition, different vaccines are required to provide protection against the most common types of meningococcal disease – one to protect against meningococcal group A, C, W & Y, and another vaccine to protect against meningococcal group B disease. There is also a separate vaccine available to protect against meningococcal group C disease.
[Please Note - There have been changes to the National Immunisation Schedule, Effective 1 October 2020: The vaccine for pneumococcal disease, Synflorix, has moved to a 2+1 schedule. A two-dose primary course will be given at ages 6 weeks and 5 months, and a booster dose at 12 months. The NeisVac-C vaccine for meningococcal C is now recommended for use in children under 9 months of age. Children older than 9 months, and adults, are recommended the ACWY vaccine, Menactra.]
